Who would guess this hidden gem is located only a few miles from Las Vegas? get ready to be amazed by the views!

How we found out about this place

Sometimes the places you stumble upon are as good as the ones you plan your trip around it. I had no idea of how close this Canyon was to Las Vegas, and it wasn’t until we googled “places to fly a drone in Las Vegas” that we added this place to our list.

Can you drive a camper van?

We arrived not knowing what to expect. At first, the fact that this was a one-way route, kind of scared us since we were in a camper van. Luckily, the roads were all well paved and camper proved!

Why are the rocks red?

The sandstone rocks in the conservation area get their color from iron oxide. Over centuries the iron oxide built up, producing the vibrant, crimson color the canyon illustrates today. Source

Calico Hills Trails

It is worth noting there are two separate trailheads within the same parking lot, Calico Tanks trail and Calico Hills trail. Make sure to pack enough water, Las Vegas is warm almost all year around. And don’t forget to enjoy the colors and patterns of nature.

Calico Hills Red Canyon

Around mile 3 on the Scenic Loop Drive, we were greeted by Calico Hills with its beautiful colorful sandstone. Unfortunately, our schedule was too tight and we had to raincheck exploring the trail by foot, but from all the photos we’ve seen, it is totally worth it!

Keystone Thrust Fault

Keystone Thrust Fault is one of the most scenic parts of the drive. Shades of red and grey contrast with the blue Vegas sky.

We were lucky to meet a local who explained to us about the fault and also recommended stopping at mile 12, for a beautiful hike.

Can you hike at Red Rock Canyon?

Locals consider this one of the best spots to go hiking around Las Vegas. Featuring well-marked trails and amazing views, you cannot go wrong! Make sure to pack a snack, as picnic tables are available as well.

We really did have a fantastic time visiting it, and we highly recommend stopping by on your next trip to Las Vegas! Some of the most unique rock formations we have ever seen.
