What is Hug Point known for?

Can you imagine traveling by stagecoach along the beach? Before the highway US 101 was finished in the late 1930, the beach was the only way to travel along this stretch of coast. During low tide you can walk along the stagecoach road, still harboring the wheel ruts carved into the rock.

Nowadays, this is a 43-acre state park, offering picnic areas, restrooms, parking and breathtaking views. Please make sure to check tide times before exploring this location.

How did Hug Point get its name?

In the early 1800s, stagecoaches traveling along the coast had to “Hug” this particular part due to the cave’s size and unpredictable tides.

Our experience at Hug Point

We first tried to visit on a Summer Sunday afternoon. Needless to say, the parking lot was packed and we ended up coming back the next morning. We had the beach for ourselves, and it was so nice to be able to share these beautiful views with our family.
